YONKERS, NY ~ Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano has announced the launch of the city's annual "Backpack to School" donation drive, providing much-needed backpacks and school supplies to students in Yonkers Public Schools. This marks the 14th year of the donation drive, which aims to support students who may not have access to these essential items.

Mayor Spano expressed his belief that every child deserves the opportunity to succeed in school and beyond. He stated, "That's why we're working to make sure families have the support they need - because we know that even basic school supplies can be tough to afford." The "Backpack to School" donation drive will run from today until Monday, August 18th. Donations can be made at various drop-off locations throughout Yonkers, including City Hall, libraries, and all four police precincts.

The suggested supply packages for donation include new backpacks filled with essential school supplies such as crayons, colored pencils, markers, glue sticks or Elmer's glue, rulers, erasers, pencils and sharpeners, loose-leaf paper, composition books, pencil pouches, pocket folders, hand sanitizer, tissue packets and masks/face coverings.

According to a recent survey by the National Retail Federation (NRF), families with children in grades K-12 are expected to spend an average of $858.07 on clothing, shoes, school supplies and electronics for the upcoming school year. This brings the total back-to-school spending to an estimated $39.4 billion, an increase from last year's $38.8 billion.

The backpacks and supplies collected through this donation drive will be distributed to a Pre-K - 8 school as selected by Yonkers Public Schools. For more information on how to get involved or make a donation, individuals can contact the Mayor's Office or visit the city's website.
