Steve Lopez and Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. Luis Rodriguez, presented the School Spotlight Award to School 17 on February 15, 2024. The school's administration, faculty, staff, parents and students were recognized for their outstanding efforts in rejuvenating the school community, fostering an inclusive learning environment and boosting academic engagement.
Under the leadership of Principal Jonathan Cartica, School 17 has become a beacon of educational excellence. Mayor Spano praised the school for its remarkable transformation driven by its commitment to diversity and academic excellence. He commended Principal Cartica and his team for their tireless efforts and perseverance.
Over the past year, Mr. Cartica and his team have worked tirelessly to meet the needs of their learning community. Their dedication has resulted in significant improvements in the school's performance. Some of the initiatives that have contributed to this success include My Sister's Keeper and My Brother's Keeper programs which aim to foster an inclusive and engaging environment for students. Steve Lopez noted that by honoring School 17 with the Mayor's School Spotlight Award, they are celebrating not just an institution but a community dedicated to academic excellence and holistic growth.
