YONKERS, NY ~ Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano expressed his disappointment and concern today after MGM Resorts announced their decision to withdraw their commercial casino license application for Empire City Casino. The mayor released a statement calling for an independent investigation into the process, stating that the reasons given by MGM for their sudden reversal do not make sense.

In his statement, Mayor Spano accused MGM of betraying the people of Yonkers and Westchester County with their decision. He also raised questions about a potential connection between this withdrawal and a deal between Bally's and former President Donald Trump. Bally's has proposed a casino at the former Trump Links in Whitestone and has agreed to pay Trump an additional $115 million if they are able to open a casino there.

Mayor Spano emphasized that the people of Yonkers deserve to know if there was any manipulation or corruption involved in this decision. He pointed out that MGM has publicly acknowledged that Empire City cannot survive without a full gaming license, making their withdrawal seem illogical.

The mayor also questioned why other bidders have not followed suit and withdrawn their applications as well, despite facing the same regulations from New York State Government. He stated that something does not add up and called for answers on behalf of the people of Yonkers.

MGM's decision to withdraw its application has raised concerns about the future of Empire City Casino, which has been a major source of revenue and employment for the city. The mayor reiterated that Yonkers is fully prepared with the necessary workforce, infrastructure, and public support for full gaming at Empire City.

In light of these developments, Mayor Spano is urging Governor Hochul to launch an independent investigation into this process to ensure transparency and fairness. The people of Yonkers deserve answers and reassurance that there was no foul play involved in this decision.
