YONKERS, NY ~ Yonkers, NY - Mayor Mike Spano has announced that the city of Yonkers, in partnership with Yonkers Arts, is now accepting submissions for the upcoming Youth Meet & Poetry Showcase. This event, titled "Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Legacy Through Creative Expression," will celebrate the life and vision of the civil rights leader through the lens of youth creativity, civic dialogue, and artistic performance.
Students from all across Yonkers are encouraged to submit original poems that reflect Dr. King's enduring themes of justice, courage, and unity. The selected works will be featured during a live showcase on Thursday, January 8th, 2026. During this event, chosen youth will have the opportunity to present their poetry and engage in meaningful face-to-face discussions with community guests.
"This is more than just a performance - it's a platform for young people to speak their truth, spark conversation, and carry forward Dr. King's dream," said Mayor Mike Spano. "We invite every young voice to be heard."

Evan Bishop, Executive Director of Yonkers Arts also expressed his excitement about this event saying, "Many pivotal movements in history began with the voices of the youth. Yonkers Arts is pleased to partner with Mayor Mike Spano in honoring Dr. King's legacy and supporting our city's talented students at this poetry showcase."
The submission guidelines for this contest are as follows: it is open to youth in grades 6-12 who reside or attend school in Yonkers; only individual submissions will be accepted (no group entries); poems must reflect themes of justice, courage and unity inspired by Dr. King's legacy; the deadline for submissions is Wednesday, December 3rd 2025; interested participants can download a cover page from www.yonkersny.gov under "MLK-Poem-Contest-2026---COVER-PAGE" and must email both the completed cover page and poem to the provided email address.
Selected poets will have the opportunity to connect with civic leaders, local artists, and their peers during the showcase. For more information on submission details and event updates, interested individuals can visit www.yonkersny.gov or contact Dr. Dwanita M. Crosby at the provided email address. This event promises to be a powerful celebration of Dr. King's legacy and a platform for young voices to be heard.
