YONKERS, NY ~ Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano has announced the formation of a new advisory board dedicated to serving the city's veteran community. The Veterans Advisory Board will be responsible for developing and recommending initiatives that aim to strengthen, support, and enhance the quality of life for Yonkers' veterans.
According to Mayor Spano, today's veterans face unique challenges that differ from those of previous generations. It is crucial that the board reflects this diversity of experience in order to better serve and support these individuals and their families. By bringing together veterans from all generations, the city hopes to reaffirm its commitment to those who have sacrificed for our freedoms.
The volunteer board will consist of seven members, with six representing each Council District and one serving at large. All members must be Yonkers residents and veterans. In order to ensure a diverse representation, at least half of the board's members will be under the age of 50.

Interested individuals can apply for a position on the board through the city's website or in person at the Yonkers Department of Veterans Affairs. Mayor Spano will personally select and convene the members of the board.
The responsibilities of the Yonkers Veterans Advisory Board include acting as a liaison between the city and various veteran-related community-based organizations, promoting awareness of veterans' contributions, and supporting events honoring these individuals.
Mayor Spano is currently accepting applications for board membership until November 3rd. This new advisory board joins nine others that have been created by Mayor Spano since 2012. Many of these boards have successfully implemented policies, recommendations, special events, and employment opportunities for their respective communities. Just last month, Mayor Spano established a Senior Advisory Board as well.
The creation of this new advisory board demonstrates Yonkers' commitment to supporting its veteran community and ensuring that their voices are heard in local decision-making processes. With a diverse group of representatives from all generations, it is hoped that the board will be able to effectively address the unique challenges faced by today's veterans and honor their contributions to the city.
