Ethan Cohen Gallery Presents the First New York Exhibition of Fox's Paintings Since the 1980s, Exploring Six Decades of Abstraction, Political Subversion, Indigenous History, and American Iconography

NEW YORK - Nyenta -- Ethan Cohen Gallery presents Clark Fox: Beyond Obedience, a major solo exhibition surveying nearly six decades of work by Clark V. Fox (born 1946), an American artist whose singular practice challenges conventional distinctions between abstraction, Pop art, political painting, and cultural critique.

Bringing together paintings from the 1960s through 2026, the exhibition traces Fox's evolution from Washington Color School abstraction to his distinctive vocabulary of historical portraiture, corporate mascots, political satire, and contemporary geometric painting. At its center is the monumental Mondrian's Empire (2026), a work that revisits the visual architecture of modernism while opening a dialogue with Indigenous geometric traditions and the cultural histories embedded within abstraction.

Fox's paintings are deceptively simple. Beneath familiar imagery, saturated color, and precise geometric arrangements lies a sophisticated system of historical references, political contradictions, and cultural codes. What initially appears playful often reveals a complex interrogation of power, identity, and the ownership of American visual culture.

Drawing upon his identification with Cherokee ancestry and his sustained engagement with Native American history, Fox transforms recognizable American imagery into a vehicle for political and cultural examination. His portraits of Indigenous leaders, American presidents, and commercial symbols challenge established narratives of national identity, asking whose histories are celebrated and whose contributions have been marginalized.

Works such as Two American Revolutionaries: Little Crow and George Washington place competing histories of resistance, sovereignty, and nationhood within a shared visual framework. Rather than treating Indigenous history as separate from American identity, Fox positions it at the center of the nation's cultural and political conversation.

This reclamation extends into his engagement with Pop art. Among his recurring subjects is Mr. Peanut, the familiar corporate mascot whose monocle, top hat, and cane suggest wealth, privilege, and commercial authority. In paintings including Mao and Mr Peanut and Mr Peanut in Persia: Isfahan, Fox relocates this seemingly innocent advertising character into politically charged contexts, transforming consumer imagery into commentary on capitalism, geopolitical power, and American cultural influence.

Where traditional Pop art elevated commercial imagery into fine art, Fox redirects that vocabulary toward political interrogation. He does not simply appropriate American icons; he reclaims their visual authority, using the language of the dominant culture to question the structures that produced it. The exhibition's centerpiece, Mondrian's Empire (2026), brings these investigations full circle. Revisiting the geometric structures associated with Piet Mondrian, the monumental painting reconnects Fox's contemporary practice to his Washington Color School beginnings while inviting comparisons with the repetition, rhythm, and geometric organization of Indigenous American textiles.

The painting can be understood simultaneously as homage and cultural reconsideration. Rather than rejecting modernism, Fox expands the conversation surrounding its visual language, positioning Indigenous geometric traditions as equally sophisticated systems of artistic expression. The result is a compelling dialogue between artistic inheritance, cultural identity, and the historical narratives through which modern art has been understood.

Fox's artistic formation developed alongside Washington Color School figures including Gene Davis, Jacob Kainen, Sam Gilliam, and Tom Downing. He studied with Japanese printmaker Un'ichi Hiratsuka, attended Pratt Institute and the Corcoran School of Art, and spent time at Andy Warhol's Factory. By approximately 1970, he had turned toward representational painting, eventually incorporating influences from Situationism, Fluxus, punk, and New York's No Wave movement. His independence extended beyond painting. In 1992, Fox founded MOCA, D.C., an alternative exhibition space in Georgetown that operated through 2006. He also established Flat, an artist-run exhibition space in his New York apartment, creating opportunities for experimental artists outside conventional institutional structures.

A longtime associate of the late curator and museum director James Harithas, Fox belonged to an independent artistic network committed to challenging established cultural hierarchies. Harithas championed his work and organized the 2022 retrospective Subversion and Spectacle at Houston's Station Museum of Contemporary Art, with senior curator Alex Tu.

With Beyond Obedience, Ethan Cohen Gallery brings renewed attention to an artist whose intellectual independence has remained remarkably consistent across six decades. From corporate mascots to Indigenous leaders, presidential portraits to modernist grids, Fox transforms familiar imagery into a coded visual language that questions how America constructs, celebrates, and remembers itself.
