CENTER VALLEY, Pa., April 2, 2025 ~ During Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in March, Olympus Corporation of the Americas took significant steps towards fulfilling its corporate mission of educating individuals and their families about the importance of preventive colorectal cancer (CRC) screenings. Through partnerships with patients, physicians, and non-profit patient advocacy organizations such as the Colorectal Cancer Alliance (CCA), Olympus is committed to spreading awareness and promoting early detection of this deadly disease.
One of the key initiatives undertaken by Olympus during this month was a live-streamed panel discussion featuring patients, a physician expert, and a patient navigator. The event, which took place on March 11th, aimed to highlight the significance of preventive screenings and encourage individuals to take charge of their health through self-advocacy. In addition to hosting the panel discussion, Olympus also sponsored the CCA Satellite Media Tour on March 4th. This tour featured CRC epidemiologist Dr. Christine Molmenti and CRC survivor DeeDee West as they gave numerous interviews on the importance of colonoscopy screenings. The tour was a huge success, garnering 352 total hits and reaching over 5.8 million people.

Furthermore, Olympus supports the CCA's Colonoscopy Assistance Program which provides coverage for screening colonoscopies for uninsured individuals. Last year alone, this program resulted in 45 screenings that found no polyps and 30 screenings with abnormal results that required further testing or polyp removal.
The importance of early detection was emphasized by Kathleen Wiltraut, an employee at Olympus who shared her personal story at the live-streamed panel discussion. Due to a history of acid reflux, Kathleen had put off getting a routine colonoscopy for years. However, after taking a home-screening test which came back positive for colorectal cancer at age 60, she finally underwent her first colonoscopy and was diagnosed with Stage III rectal cancer. Kathleen's message to others is clear: "Don't put it off. Get screened."
Dr. Renee Williams, a gastroenterologist with NYU Langone Health and a panelist at the event, stressed the importance of following the instructions for colonoscopy prep carefully. She compared performing a colonoscopy on a patient who isn't prepped well to driving with a dirty windshield, stating that it can lead to missed polyps or cancer and may require the procedure to be rescheduled.

The American Cancer Society reports that while overall CRC rates have decreased since the mid-1980s, there has been an alarming increase in rates among individuals under 50 years old. This highlights the critical need for spreading awareness about the importance of screening.
